Store Eggs Pointy Side Down

Why is it best to store eggs pointy side down in cartons? It's best to store eggs pointy side down because the air cell/sack/pocket that is in the egg is at the rounded end.   When this end remains upward the egg retains moisture, keeps the yolk centered in the whites and reduces breakage.

If you are collecting your own eggs and are going to be storing them short term, it really doesn't matter which direction they are, even on their sides in a basket or bowl. But commercially, eggs can be stored up to 5‑6 months at a time, and for that reason it is important to store them correctly.
