Bothersome Bugs, Mites and Lice
This topic will make you quiver. Bugs are bothersome no matter how treated, ignored or sugar coated. Speaking of sugar coated....lice (left untreated) lay bazillions of eggs on a feather folicle - the eggs resemble a sugar cube.
Never mind the fact that lice and mite infestations reduce egg production – can you imagine how horribly annoying they can be?
Lice typically live in and around the vent and under wings while mites camp out in clusters anywhere they feel it’s warm. Mites also spend their daylight hours hiding out in cracks and crevasses of the coop, run, roosts, nesting boxes – you name it, if there’s a crack to creep into they will. Come nightfall, they find their chicken host and work their sinister magic laying eggs and creating mite colonies that are nearly impossible to eradicate.
Routinely check your flock for lice and mites and treat at the first sighting with Poultry Protector. A warm water bath followed up with a good dousing of food grade diatomaceous earth also helps to erradicate the bugging bugs.
